EdPlus

A sneak peek of my experience at EdPlus as a UX Design Assistant

I was working as a UX designer at EdPlus at Arizona State University (ASU). EdPlus is a central enterprise unit for ASU focused on the design and scalable delivery of digital teaching and learning models to increase student success. Our team is responsible for creating and maintaining the standard design component library called Rocket Design System (RDS) and designing the websites like ASU Online, Air University, Starbucks College Achievement Plan, and etc.

At a glance

An overview of what I've done

RDS Component Design and Documentation

• Created new inclusive design & digital accessibility components
• Documentation of all new components that include best practices (do’s and don’ts), interactions, component description, and how to use this component
• Overview end-to-end process which includes explaining components to developer’s, perform design QA, and maintain master source library

ASU Online Website Design

• Designed  responsive ASU Online website for mobile, desktop, and tablet
• Performed design QA of the website
• Analyzed HotJar recordings and heatmaps of the website to understand user’s online behavior

Frontitude Plug-in Demo

• Presented Frontitude plug-in’s features and benefits to the team of designers, researchers, developers, and content writers

EdPlus’s RDS (Rocket Design System) contains primitives, components, and elements.

• Primitives: high-level system patterns, i.e. color, typography, shapes, etc.
• Components: containers of system patterns, i.e. cards, modules
• Elements: parts of the system that cannot be further broken down, i.e. control inputs, labels

Larger pieces of UI made from primitives and elements

We have designed various RDS components like Intro section, fields, RFI, Parallax section, pagination, tabbed panel, header and footer, explore section, card components, sticky nav, and more.

Also, I made sure that we create all the possible variations of each component. For example, below is the image of all the possible variations of card components that can be used on the website.

Possible Variations of Card Components

Using all the RDS components we have designed all the ASU Online pages. ASU Online offers hundreds of online degrees and certificates in fields like business, digital media, engineering, sustainability, and more.

What I learned

• Learned to work in an Agile development environment and how to use Jira.
• Cross-functional conversation allows me to determine the proper scope of the project. Especially when the problem space is complex. It also allows you to receive feedback early and move quickly through the problem space.
• Be in service to other designers and form relationships through communication in delivering consultancy and education.
• It is integral for a designer to always embrace a learner's mindset and keep seeking feedback in order to build on existing knowledge.
